Marshall Sixers vs Cardinal Knights match report

Nov 20, 2017 11:01 AM | Cardinal Knights won by 3 wickets | Scorecard

The inception of the exclusive CPL took place last Friday, and what better to get it started off with a low-scoring T20 thriller between the Marshall Sixers and the Cardinal Knights. An entertaining auction three days earlier, ensured balance was the motto and captains truly acquired the players they desired for.

Marshall Sixers skipper, Sahil Shakir, won the first toss of the tournament and elected to bat under slight overcast conditions. He along with his partner, Ranjit Patil, came out to open the innings and started off cautiously. It took three overs for the Knights to get the first breakthrough as a simple run-out caused the dismissal of Sahil Shakir (4) back to the pavilion. Ranjith Patil (18) played his fearless knock along with the mighty Navjot Singh (26), but their partnership were to see the end after the experienced bowling duo of Gaurav Mathur and the skipper, Vaibhav Oberoi, saw a series of wickets fall within no time. Five wickets between the two saw the Sixers crumble to a below par score, as no real contributions from the Sixers lower batting order took place. Abhishek Prakash and Niranjin Patil wrapped up the innings with three wickets between them and ensured the Knights to be chasing a substandard scored of 90 from the allotted 20 overs.

Marshall Sixers: 89/10 in 15.2 overs
Pick of the bowlers for Cardinal Knights: Skipper Vaibhav Oberoi 3-0-22-4

With 90 runs on the board, the only way the Sixers were to taste victory was to bowl the Knights all out, but the opening partnership of Jay Patel (8) and Denver Bopaiah (30) saw the Knights get off to a flying start. Sri Vijay Chaparia (7) came in next and also provided a boundary to keep the flow of runs going. At this point, it looked like the Knights were cruising to victory, but Karan Sharma came to the destroy the party with some pacey bowling and got 3 wickets in quick succession to put the Knights on the back foot. He along with the economical Navjot Singh held the Knights to 55-5 and kept the match at an intriguing balance. Once again it was the skipper Vaibhav Oberoi (13) who took up responsibility and with aid of Sagar Patel (12) finished the game convincingly to record an incredible 3 wicket win over the Sixers.

A positive start for the Knights as they kick-start their campaign with a win. Tuff loss for the Sixers, but a lot of positives to take from this game. Overall, from the looks of the first game, the CPL looks like its going to promise nothing less than enthralling and nail-biting games in the near future.

Cardinal Knights: 90/7 in 14.3 overs
Pick of the bowlers for Marshall Sixers: Karan Sharma 4-0-16-2

Man of the Match: Vaibhav Oberoi for his brilliant all-round performance with the bat, ball, and fielding.
